Regional Centre for the Visual and Performing Arts

Beginning in 1998, Centennial Secondary School expanded its existing programs in Art, Music and Drama in accordance with its new mandate as the Regional Centre for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Eligible students who wish to participate in the specialized Arts Program take foundation courses in drama, music and visual art (with the exception of Music Specialists - see below). From grade 10 on, students receive specialized courses in at least two of these areas, while fulfilling the same requirements for graduation as all students in the school. Graduates of the specialized program will be well prepared to enter any major post-secondary program.

With its excellent facilities, its team of specialized staff, and its unique expanded program, Centennial offers the Arts Program applicant an opportunity to work with like-minded students in an exceptionally supportive environment.

The program is intended both for students who are seeking a career in the Arts, and for those whose interest is supplementary to the pursuit of a career in some other field.

OPTIONS FOR APPLICATION:

1) Drama Major
2) Visual Arts Major
3) Instrumental Music Major
4) Vocal Music Major
5) Music Specialist *

All applicants to the Arts Program are enrolled in visual art, drama and a choice of instrumental or vocal music.

* Music Specialists (vocal or instrumental) must enroll in either drama or visual art in addition to their music, but are not required to take all three arts disciplines.

There are now entry points for grades 10, 11 & 12 students interested in joining the Arts Program. Audition requirements available upon request.

ENTRANCE:

Application to the program includes:

1) an interview with subject-specific staff
2) an audition (music or drama) OR presenting a portfolio of your work (visual art)
3) a School Referral Statement from your home school

Positions in the program will be limited to 25 to 30 students in the grade nine year, with additional spaces available to Music Specialists. Students must maintain a 70% in their major subject area to continue in the program. Individual concerns will be reviewed by the Department Head.

Auditions will be held in March, 2010. Appointment letters will be mailed in March 2010 to those who have submitted completed application forms. The decision of the Admission Committee is final. Audition results will be available soon after the auditions are finished. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Thursday March 11, 2010
